Value IT

Information & Communications Technology underpins most businesses and organisations. But it’s hard to get right. The perception of the ICT function is often that it over-sells and under-delivers on services and projects. The reality may be different but frequently it’s not. And is ‘perfect’ delivery of ICT services and projects at high cost preferable to poor services delivered on a shoestring?

So the goal for the CIO or IT Director is to create an ICT function that provides precisely the required level and quality of ICT services and projects at a price that meets or exceeds the expectations of all the associated stakeholders. This goal is by definition unachievable since stakeholder expectations will increase as their perception of ICT improves. At the heart of this struggle for the ICT function is the notion of Value.

We have developed, and used many times for the benefit of our customers, a methodology called Integrated Operational Planning and Budgeting (IOPB). The utilisation of IOPB enables the ICT function to evolve into a state wherein the true cost and the true level/quality of every service component and every project delivered is clearly visible to any stakeholder. This allows Value to be objectively assessed and moves the debate from one centred on perceptions of ICT to one centred on reality.
