Green IT Strategy

During 2007 it became apparent to us that CIOs were increasingly becoming concerned that they were not responding to the threat of climate change in a sufficiently holistic or formal way. CIO Plus has developed a framework for the development and delivery of Green IT strategy underpinning organisational Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) objectives.

Recognition by every world leader of the inescapable link between rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere and climate change is resulting in legislative measures to save our planet. These measures, intended to reverse the trend in CO2 levels, will impact every business and organisation. There will be a new regulatory environment (caps, quotas, trading, carbon accounting & reporting) and a new, carbon centric, marketing environment within which to operate. And ICT can contribute in excess of 50% of an organisation’s carbon footprint. All ‘C’ level directors need to react to this new future and, from the CIO’s perspective, as soon as possible given the length of time that some of the components of a Green IT strategy will take to implement (e.g. application retirement, server virtualisation, new sourcing strategies particularly in the area of data centres).

But the fundamental first step is to develop a Green IT strategy that is in sync with the CSR objectives and CIO Plus are well placed to assist with this.
